RADRICK FARMS GOLF COURSE JOURNEY MAP
PROJECT OVERVIEW
Radrick Farms Golf Course, located just east of Ann Arbor, Michigan, is a semi-private, 18-hole championship-caliber course owned and operated by the University of Michigan. Designed by Pete and Alice Dye, it stands as one of their earliest designs and has grown into one of the premier collegiate golf courses in the country. Since opening in 1965, Radrick Farms has played a significant role in the University of Michigan community, the city of Ann Arbor, and the surrounding ecosystem. To accurately capture and preserve this rich and important journey, Greener Golf partnered with Radrick Farms to embark on an ambitious 3-year long journey map project aimed at fostering a sustainable and prosperous trajectory for the golf course. Through this initiative, Radrick Farms is reinforcing its position as a model for sustainable golf course management and long-term excellence.
PROJECT GOALS
-
Radrick Farms is more than a golf course; it is a valuable resource for education, sustainability, and community well-being. The Journey Map reinforces its role as:
A living laboratory where students and researchers engage.
A restorative campus green space that promotes mental and physical well-being.
A leader in sustainable innovation.
-
A data-driven evaluation of financial health, water use, chemical inputs, greenhouse gas emissions, biodiversity, and community impact establishes clear benchmarks for informed decision-making.
-
The Journey Map ensures the thorough documentation of Radrick Farms’ rich history, from its Indigenous roots and ownership transitions to the Matthaei family’s contributions, the course’s design and construction by Pete & Alice Dye, and key historical renovations. By capturing this legacy, the Journey Map preserves the course’s traditions, culture, and identity, ensuring that institutional knowledge is not lost as staff and leadership evolve over time.
-
As one of Pete and Alice Dye’s earliest designs, Radrick Farms is a significant architectural landmark. Strategic refinements to bunkers, greens, and turf management will uphold Pete and Alice Dye’s original design intentions while enhancing the golfing experience for the U-M community.
